Mezzanotte
6-11 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn
201) 475-8333

Mezzanotte bills itself as a Northern Italian restaurant, but in fact it features as many entrées from the south as from the north. All are very competently prepared and come with a salad and vegetables. The decor is much improved over that of the previous owner. Value is the hallmark here. $$ 11/06]

La Lanterna
29 West Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood
(201) 444-5
520

La Lanterna is a charming little Italian restaurant. The regular menu is standard, but there are numerous specials that are more interesting. The portions are appropriate, neither gargantuan nor skimpy, and the service is solid. There are tables outside for those who find the acoustics too lively. Dinner for two is $56. Reservations are suggested. La Lanterna will be closed the second week of August through the first week of September. $$-$$$ [8/06]

615 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair
(973-746-2233)

Table 8 is a terrific, trendy American restaurant owned by Syrian-born Demetri Malki. Talented chef Michael Clampffer previously ran Dish in Passaic (now closed) and the Stage House Inn in Scotch Plains. All the dishes we tried were delicious, but the crab cake, seared deep-sea scallops, duck breast, gnocchi with osso bucco, and braised short ribs stood out. Service is professional. Reservations are a must. View the complete menu at www.table8nj.com. Dinner for two averages $$$ [7/06]

Vincent's
885 Belmont Avenue, North Haledon
(973) 238-4450

Vincent’s features upscale decor and reliable Italian cuisine. While it doesn’t stray far from the beaten path, the quality is good, and the service is friendly and competent. Veal and seafood dishes stand out here. View the complete menu and get directions at www.vincentsristorente.com. Closed Mondays. $$$ [06/06]

Justin's
234 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne
(973) 423-4345

Justin’s is one of the better Italian restaurants in the area. The sauces, both southern and northern Italian, show an attention to detail and balance that elevate Justin’s above the typical Italian eateries. Offerings are numerous, specials are fairly priced, and the service is attentive. $$ [5/06]

Bhoj
430 Market Street in Elmwood Park
(201) 797-6800

Bhoj is a lovely northern Indian restaurant. It’s a bit farther than Ridgewood, but you won’t have to fight the traffic, and parking is no problem. All the dishes we tried were delicious, but the lamb samosas and the gobi Manchurian were special. Service is attentive. View the complete menu at www.bhoj.us. Lunch and weekend buffets are a steal. $-$$ [4/06]

Silver Oak American Bistro
26 Wilsey Square, Ridgewood
(201) 444-4744

As its name implies, Silver Oak features progressive American cuisine. This casual, yet elegant bistro is run by Gary Needham previously of the Galileo Restaurant in Washington D.C. (I guess he was as disgusted with Washington as the rest of us!) The selections are heavy on cajun and barbecue. Quality is quite good. Silver Oak is open seven days, and the menu can be viewed at www.silveroakbistro.com/dinner.htm. $$$  There is also a tasting menu ($$) [03/06]
