Gazelle Café
and Grill
Gazelle Café and Grill replaces Secrets of Suzanne with an updated, attractively appointed little café that is open for both lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Chef James Miceli and Chef/Manager Ron Norrell have produced a diverse menu which aims for healthy offerings without getting preachy about it. Many of the entrees are grilled. Vegetable accompaniments are emphasized, not an afterthought. The appetizers, entrees, and desserts are interesting and well prepared. Portions are generous. $$$ [1/05]
Lodos is a Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant of very good quality and moderate prices. The menu will look familiar to lovers of Middle-Eastern food, but the execution here is a step above most similar restaurants. The stuffed grape leaves are superb, as are the fish dishes and the skewered lamb. Vegetarians will be as happy here as meat-eaters, and portions are generous. Dinner for two is only $36. [12/04]
Flirt is a “must visit” for sushi lovers. It bills itself as “Latino-Asian Fusion” cuisine, but this is really a high-end sushi joint with Latin music and an inuendo-laden menu. The sushi and sashimi are of extremely high quality, and the sauces show unusual finesse and balance. Riedel glassware attests to a seriousness of purpose. The atmosphere is hypnotic, the seating is spacious, and the service is professional. Don’t miss the tuna and salmon towers. “Fusion” rolls can be ordered with brown rice! $$$. Rocca is the new reincarnation of Mezza Luna. Prices are higher, but the good news is that the quality of the food is excellent, and the menu is more creative and interesting. The menu is divided into three sections, appetizers (antipasti), pasta dishes (primi), and meat/seafood dishes (secondi). Any two selections will be more than enough food. Vegetables are priced separately. $$$ [7/04] Sanducci's
Trattoria Sanducci’s Trattoria is a solid, local, family owned Italian restaurant that offers few surprises but gives fine value. The pizzas are outstanding and make a great appetizer for a group of four or more. Entrées include the usual calamari, shrimp, chicken, veal, and pasta dishes, but they are well prepared. All the breads are homemade. This nonsmoking restaurant is a BYO, but it also has an unusual liquor license that allows it to sell the wines from Alba Vineyards, one of New Jersey’s finest. Obviously we brought our own! $$ [5/04]
