Janice has evolved into a solid neighborhood bistro. The decor is retro/lunch counter, the service is informal but correct, and the food is terrific. The second career of a wife and husband team, Janice (the restaurant) offers a limited menu of nicely prepared and presented dishes. Janice (the chef) cooks the same fare she made at home for years for family and friends. The selections are hearty, mediterranean/bistro comfort food. Portions are generous. $$$ [9/03] Mediterraneo
Restaurant Featuring Turkish cuisine, Istanbul Restaurant is a 34-seat gem. Lovers of middle-eastern cuisine (Greek, Lebanese, etc.) will feel right at home. From the enormous Shepherd Salad to the wonderfully flavorful grape leaves to the incredibly tender lamb cubes in the Sis Kebab, Istanbul Restaurant is a winner. $-$$ There is also a bargain lunch menu at this non-smoking restaurant. Piccola Italia Piccola Italia is now located at the site of the former Volare. They moved from Plaza Road where one of Fair Lawn's best known and most beloved buildings was destroyed by a fire. Piccola Italia means "Little Italy," and this taste of Italy is neither fancy, daring, nor exotic. It is, however, delicious. You won't be surprised by anything on the menu, but you will be pleased none-the-less. Dinner for two (a shared appetizer, 2 entrees, a shared dessert, and 2 coffees) is about $45. Piccola Italia does a lively early-bird-special business. $$ [7/03] Malee
Malee (201-612-7797), at 2 East Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood, is a fine Thai restaurant. It features the traditional peanut, coconut, and curry sauces. The appetizer sampler is perfect for 2. There are numerous dishes to choose from. Chicken, shrimp, beef, pork, duck and even salmon form the basis for the entrees. Noodle and rice dishes can be combined with small portions of meat, poultry, or seafood, and there are numerous vegetarian dishes. $$ [4/03] La Piazza
La Piazza is a charming little Italian restaurant in the center of town, yet it is tucked away from all the noise and action. The menu features the basics of southern Italian cooking, but there are many special touches such as the use of home-made mozzarella, fettucine, and ravioli. The appetizers and salads are especially good here. A lava rock is used for those dishes that are grilled. $$ [2/03] Café Amici Café Amici, formerly Rigoletto Espresso, is the perfect restaurant for a light dinner after a hard day of work or shopping. This casual, café-style Italian eatery features much higher quality food than one would expect. The numerous salad offerings and the personal pizzas are interesting and quite good. The excellent pasta dishes can be ordered vegetarian or with shrimp or chicken. There are also many luncheon specialty sandwiches. $ [12/02] Nagoya
Nagoya replaces the excellent Oyama restaurant. The fare here is traditional Japanese (teriyaki, tempura, and noodle dishes) as well as sushi, sashimi, and hand rolls. Seafood and vegetables predominate, but there is a smattering of beef, chicken, and pork. Everything we tried was fresh, tasty, and attractively presented. The decor is lovely and relaxing. $$ [11/02] Rose's Place Rose’s Place is a fine Lebanese restaurant. They offer well prepared middle-eastern appetizer staples such as kibbeh, hummus, babaghanouj, and stuffed grape leaves. In addition to various tasty kabob and seafood dishes, you can try some very interesting specials. Although it might not be your first choice, the frog’s legs were exceptionally good. $ [9/02, revisited 12/03]
